The book Native Son by Richard Wright is divided into three books rather than chapters. The title of Book One is "Fear". It is clear that fear is shown by looking at the first pages of book one. This fear came when the family awaken and saw a large black rat in their apartment. The rat was probably more afraid of Bigger, yet Bigger had fear of the rat. Once the rat attack Bigger, the fear that Bigger had towards the rat turns into violence in trying to kill the rat. The first book could also be called "shame," as Bigger also feels guilty. The suffering his family endures while living in such terrible conditions constantly reminds Bigger how powerless he is to help them. Bigger relies on his toughness to hide behind his fear of these circumstances. He is trap in a tiny apartment with failure, poverty, shame, and fear pervading his life. Bigger has no motivation to succeed.
