National Policy

The National Policy When Canada first became a nation in 1867, John A MacDonald was its first prime minister.He remained the prime minister until he had to resign in 1873. his party was accused of accepting bribes from a large railway compnay. It was the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the event was called the Pacific Scandal. Alexander McKenzie became the next prime minister and the Liberal party formed the government of Canada for the next 5 years. During MacKenzies term as prime minister, Canada and the rest of the world suffered an economic depression. Most Canadians blamed MacKenzie for the depression and the Liberals were voted out of the office in 1878. John A macDonald and the Conservatives came into power.MacDonald put into a place a plan that he hoped would build Canada into a strong nation. His plan became known as the National policy. Confederation- July 1st 1867, was the uniting of all the BNA colonies under a central government American Civil War- 1861- 1865 The Northern Stateswanted America to stay one country, but the Southern States wanted to divide into 2 different countries. In the end the Northern States won and the US remained one country. Manifest Destiny- Some American believed that in time, they would control alll of Britains territories to the north, currently Canada. Manifest Destiny was one of the reasons that led to the decision for Confederation Fenians- The Fenians were Irish Soldiers ( they were expierinenced soldiers, Civil War) who thought that if they could capture all of British North American colonies to the North they could get Britain to free Ireland(Ireland was under rule of Britain at the time) Reciprocity Treaty- 1854 was an agreement between the BNA colonies and the US.
