Pascal’s Wager is an argument based on decision theory rather than traditional epistemic arguments that rely on ontology and experiences. Pascal comes to the conclusion that if we do not know whether God exists, we should be reasonable and play it safe by believing in His existence rather than risk eternal punishment. According to Pascal, there is no way for us to know God’s existence. However, we do know that we have two choices: God exists, or God does not exist. Assuming there is a fifty percent chance of either option’s validity, it follows that there is no rational way to choose between the two. If the odds are equal, either choice will be arbitrarily made without any basis in reason. Nevertheless, we must make a decision. If reason cannot be used, then each option must be examined to see which one will produce the greatest personal happiness.
