“Higher Learning” by director John Singleton follows a cross section of three freshmen as they follow separate paths during their first semester at Columbus University. Singleton accurately portrays the typical stereotypes that would be attributed to each of his main characters. This is effectively done with one of the beginning scenes in which Malik Williams (Omar Epps), Kristen Connor (Kristy Swanson), and Remy (Michael Rapaport) are setting up their dorm rooms. Singleton shows Malik’s room, decorated with athletic and hip hop paraphernalia, blasting rap music. He then flashes to Kristy’s room, in which she proceeds to post up pictures of her friends and family in an orderly manner, exemplifying the typical, well-to-do white girl image. Singleton then juxtaposes Remy’s scene to add in the final effect.
