Chapter 3-4 ID’s 8-14 Indentured Servants- In 1619 as tobacco exploded on the scene in Virginia the Virginia Company awarded a 50 acre “headright” to whoever would pay for someones voyage over to Virginia who would then work for 4-7 years. With the shortage of women in Virginia of the time, women indentured servants had to opportunity to have their voyage fees paid by wealthy males. Indentured servants were usually white along with their masters so they would not be worked as hard and would not be as used to the harsh environments as the African Americans. Indentured servants after completing their years were supposed to receive a parcel of land but as the economy went downhill this opportunity faded.
