The end of The Crucible, when John Proctor refuses to hand over the confession and ends up tearing it up, is a very controversial part of the play. This scene raises many questions of John Proctor’s character. However, in contradictory to these questions, I find this scene very believable and likely of John Proctor’s character. Throughout The Crucible John was very worried about his reputation. Actually during most of the play that was John Proctor’s number one concern. There are several examples throughout the play that display John’s concern for his reputation in a very obvious manor. The author actually goes out of his way to make this character trait of John known.
