As a daughter growing up in an unhappy family, Clifton expressed her feelings toward her father in this poem. Clifton was frustrated and angry because her father was unable to provide care for his family. But in the end of poem, Clifton was trying to forgive her father and forget about the painful memory that she had since she was a child. In the first stanza, Clifton described a sad scene on a Friday night, which supposedly to be the “best day of the week” for most families. Clifton’s father came home late at night, but Clifton didn’t felt a sense of relief, it is because Friday is the time to pay for the bills. Her father, like usual, couldn’t afford to pay any of it, and it is not the first time that he couldn’t pay on time.
