Carl von Linne (Linnaeus) Carl Linnaeus is known as the father of taxonomy. He was born May 23, 1707 in the province of Smaland in southern Sweden. As a child, he began to develop a love for plants and became fascinated with their names. His father, a gardener and a Lutheran pastor, was disappointed when he didn’t show interest in the priesthood. He attended many universities in Sweden studying medicine. He spent most of his time collecting and studying plants at the universities. In 1735 he finished his medical degree in the Netherlands and published the 1st edition of his classification of living things, Systema Naturae. In this publication he popularized binomial nomenclature and used a hierarchy of classifying organisms from larger groups into smaller groups.
