Genetics: Nature vs. Nurture How much of our personality is predetermined within our genes? Do we have a choice in the actions we take? Are we products of our environment? The debate over the nature vs. nurture is a hot topic in today’s society. Lawyers use genetics to get murders and rapists lesser sentences because they “had no choice”. The question always comes back to, are we free to make our own decisions, or are our actions predetermined by our genes. I don’t think that the issue is really nature vs. nurture but rather how do the two work together to form our personalities. It isn’t a matter of one or the other; it’s a combination of both. You aren’t born a complete individual with your personality already intact, if this were true, traumatic events in our early stages would have no effect on us later in life.
