Nick being new to the neighborhood and new to the party atmosphere did not know who Mr. Gatsby was, even though he was attending his party by invitation. The two met by striking up a conversation as complete strangers then introducing themselves. From then on they were friends hanging out around town and dining together on occasion. 2. Mr. Buchanan & Mr. Gatsby’s Argument In this point in the book Mr. Tom Buchanan is fully aware of a relationship between his wife, Daisy, and Mr. Gatsby.
