Parallel Empires
     
     The ancient empire of Egypt and the Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties thrived like no other empire of their time. These empires dominated their region without fear of any opposition. In ancient time, rulers of the world were so powerful that they attempted to conquer as much land as possible to be at the summit of the entire world. The empire of Egypt and the dynasties of ancient China would not experience opposition, their unity as an empire overcame any aggression, and that is why they were able to thrive for generations. The groundwork of these empires was so ideal that these empires would be the stepping stones of the future kingdoms to come. The location and the regime within these empires was perfect, the future empires built in their place took on many of the same values as these ancient empires possessed. In becoming such powerful empires, there needed to be basic principles that these great nations contained. Both ancient Egypt and the dynasties of ancient China contained a sophisticated form city formation; whether the city formation was used as a defense tactic or a reliable location for trade, it was vital for the empire to flourish. The empires contained a very strong religious system. ... Each one of these civilizations, whether the Egyptian or any one of the dynasties, were controlled by a ruler. The city formation, the obligations of a ruler and the entire administrative system, and the ties to religion and the prosperity of the empire due to strong religious beliefs were some of the chief points that linked both the ancient Egyptian way of life with the Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties.
     The location of these ancient empires was very important. ... Although the Yellow River may not have been crucial to the existence of the Chinese dynasties, archeologist discovered that much of the empire was, in fact, located all around this chambered river. ... At first, these two empires began to build walls. As these empires were still growing in number, there needed to be some sort of protection within the city limits. It may have been still questionable of where potential rivals may have resided, these empires took on a cautious approach and built walls for self defense. ... The Chinese character, cheng, symbolizes both city and city wall. Just as most cities contain many of the same elements, such as a ruler, a government, and a religious system, every Chinese city would be enclosed within a wall.
