Hanging Fire

Hanging Fire is a melancholic poem in which the speaker tells of their troubles in adolescence. The gender of this speaker is never specifically mentioned and it is difficult to infer what it may be because a few lines in the poem can prove safe for either sex. “…the boy I can not live with out still sucks his thumb” (Lorde 3-4). One could interpret these two lines as the speaker telling about themselves, as they can also be interpreted as a young girl telling about a boy she likes. One thing about the speaker which we do know is the fact they are young, fourteen years of age to be exact. From the very beginning of the poem the speaker sets ant unhappy tone, “…I am fourteen and my skin has betrayed me” (Lorde 1-2). From this point it is obvious the poem will be a rather sad one because right off the bat the speaker mentions what is ailing him/her. It’s also important to note the word “betrayed” as it is not a term to be taken lightly and proves the speaker is serious.
