The Cost of Prescription Drugs Today America faces a severe problem concerning the cost of prescription drugs. The United States is one of the only industrialized nations in the world that doesn’t have a national healthcare plan. Millions of underprivileged and older Americans struggle to pay for life saving drugs. Most drug companies refuse to lower prices and will not allow less expensive generic drugs to be sold. With Americas population getting older more Americas are going to need prescription drugs. American spends more money than another country in the world on prescription drugs. “For every dollar an American senior citizen spends on prescription drugs, that same drug is sold in Germany for 71 cents, Sweden for 68 cents, the U.K. for 65 cents, Canada for 64 cents, France for 57 cents and Italy for 51 cents. Ironically, most of these drugs are manufactured in the U.S.” (Sanders) Many Americans feel that it is time for drug companies to share the costs of the drugs they produce. Most companies spend their money on advertisements and political contributions. “In 1998, for example, the top ten pharmaceutical companies saw a 26% increase in their profits over the preceding year – with an average profit of $2.5 billion.” (Sanders) These companies sell drugs in other countries for less than half and still make a profit. They are more than able to lower prices of drugs.
