The article addresses the problem of multifetal pregnancies as well as the problem of investigating too much about the autonomy of infertile couples and not enough to the interests of the children. During the past two decades, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of multiple births. There are three factors for the rise in the number of births. The first factor is due to older maternal age which increases multifetal pregnancies about twenty percent. Infertility treatments known as ovarian stimulation, sometimes causes multiple ova to become fertilized, resulting in multiple births. The third factor is assisted reproductive technology, which includes in vitro fertilization, gamete intrafallopian transfer, and finally intrafallopian transfer. In in vitro fertilization, four to six pre-embryos are inplanted to increase pregnancy thereby causing multifetal gestation. Along with the multiple pregnancies, there are significant medical risks for the fetuses and the infants. The medical risks can range from low birth weight to at the most severe risk, death.
