Nike is continuously learning how to respond to social threats and opportunities, while encouraging other organizations to do what is socially acceptable. This memo discusses Nike’s social and ethical performance regarding its international contractors and overviews a reasonable set of operational guidelines for other firms to follow. Opinion of Nike’s Actions Nike is a huge multinational firm and is the number one sneaker manufacturer in the world. To attain that position, Nike has had to rely on a team of high caliber executives. It is our opinion that these same executives could have predicted the kind of onslaught and public outcry that persistently dogged the company for a number of years and create the course of actions. Nevertheless, even in the aftermath of strong public criticism, Nike chose to follow the detrimental course of action. The company refused to accept that its contractors had engaged in unethical acts; therefore, it took no action. Nike was right not to interfere in the actions of its contractors. However, the company could have enforced a proper code of conduct and compelled its contractors to adhere to it. Reebok, for instance, had a good human rights track record and ensured that its contractors adhered to certain health and safety standards.
