In Oedipus case, it was his destiny to find his fathers murderer and expel him from the city of Thebes, which was successfully accomplished after great hesitance, causing his wifes death and his own suffering. For Elesin in Death and the Kings Horsemen, prolonging his ascension into the afterlife causes a great uproaring among the townspeople, and initiates the death of his son. ... For Oedipus, it was the discovery and removal of the kings murderer that would initiate a cure for the plague that struck Thebes, leaving a paramount responsibility to the new king to follow through with his obligation. ... Oedipus wife, Jocasta is one of these major obstacles. ... The role of the protagonist is central to the story in Soyinkas Death and the Kings Horseman as well. ... " Though his death will bring good fortune to the Yoruban people, he continues to stall and ultimately his family continues to exist in a state of unrest, which is only cured with the sacrifice of his son, Olunde. ... Oedipus is destined by a higher power to marry his mother and kill his father, which comes true, but at the same time he is punished for such a destiny, causing suffering for his family around him. ...
Ignorance is far from bliss for Oedipus and Elesin after discovering the negative consequences of refusing familial obligations, no matter how disconnected they may feel to the community.
