FILM BLADE RUNNER SHOWS WHAT IT IS TO BE HUMAN DISCUSS

“Blade Runner: Director’s Cut” is a science-fiction film set in the not too distant future, 2019. ... It is within this place that the film raises the central question – What is it that makes us human? Blade Runner is a film that deals with the topic of humanity and shows us that it can be vastly distorted and altered and it criteria stretched but ultimately the film does show us what it is to be human, it’s the ability to exert human qualities. The film shows us these qualities through the comparison of the main characters and whilst it points us in a direction the film leaves us to decide what it really is to be human.

Towards the beginning of the film we learn that four replicants have escaped from slavery on another world and returned to Earth. A specialist replicant-hunter (Blade Runner), Rick Deckard, is given the job of tracking down these escapees and killing them. This is not, however, a simple chase film. ... We will learn as the film progresses that this test is used to distinguish ‘replicant’ from ‘human’. ... Hence we see that the feeling of emotions makes a person human. Even though human beings can also lack this empathetic relationship with others they still maintain their human status. ... Their trip back to Earth was motivated by the desire for more life, to extend it until it matched that of a human being. Humans live much longer than replicants, so to be able to live longer means they will be more human. Yet, we will see that the replicants with four-year life spans at times exhibit a desire for life, love and dignity more than most of the real humans in the film. Their accession to human status is stopped by only the unwillingness and refusal of other human beings.
