Dead Poets Society’s suicide scene focuses on the success of Neil on stage at the beginning of the scene, ending with Neil committing suicide. The aims of this scene are to be dramatic, serious, emotional and to show the change of relationships between characters. Most of the main characters are involved in this scene. Prior to this scene, the we know that Mr Perry doesn’t agree with Neil wanting to be an actor. Therefore Neil seeks advice from Mr Keating to talk to his father. We believe that Neil has spoken to his father and he has been given the all clear to go ahead with the play. The scene opens wit a long shot with music in the theatre from A Midnight Summers Dream. As the audience watching the film, we see Neil acting as Puck in the play. The camera then switches to his friends who are in the audience supporting Neil. They show excitement like Knox winning Chris when they were holding hands, the audience laughing, people smiling, Mr Keating showing thumbs up, Charlie responding ‘he’s good, he’s really good’. This shows that there is an element of success in movie. We then see a medium shot of Neil excited. We then see Mr Perry appear. When Neil realises that Mr Perry is in the theatre, we see his face reaction and automatically assume that he has seen his father.
