Abortion in the UK

Kate Abraham – Communication 4

Abortion

Introduction

Every year in the United Kingdom, over 160,00 women have an abortion. ...
Privately, an abortion can cost up to £900, though in Britain the NHS pays for around three-quarters of all abortions.
For a woman to receive an abortion she must have the consent from two doctors, who both agree that one or more of the following applies:

A. ...
(Abortion Act 1967)

A doctor can refuse to refer a patient for an abortion, as the law allows doctors to ‘conscientiously object’ to abortion, but health guidelines insist that doctors who do object must refer a woman to another doctor who will be able to help her.

History of Abortion Law

Abortion has been used throughout the world for thousands of years. In Britain in the 19th Century, abortion became illegal for the first time. Anyone found to have either performed or had an abortion were sentenced to life imprisonment. ... Not surprisingly, a high number of women died through trying to abort their children themselves, and after much pressure the Abortion Act was passed on 27 April 1968.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act of 1990 made changes to the Abortion Act and changed the time limit from 28 to 24 weeks on most abortions, as new medical advances demanded it be changed.

Law Outside Britain

Early Abortion upon request is available in many countries within Europe, and in the USA an abortion preformed before 12 weeks is available as a constitutional right. In Canada, abortion has been completely decriminalised.

Women in Northern Ireland, unlike women in the rest of the UK, have no access to safe legal abortion, even in a private clinic. In 1997, 1,572 women from Northern Ireland were recorded as having an abortion in Britain.
