1. Michael Kammen states several reasons for a written constitution in his writing in the Reader. The colonists wanted to be able to pick their government and not be turned into a government from their past experiences overseas. This was new territory and they appreciated their freedom and didn’t want to see that destroyed. Another reason for the written constitution, as Kammen states, was the “doctrine of the social contract.” This written constitution makes our government follow a set of guidelines as well as the people. It keeps the authority in accordance with laws to keep the system moving. This refers to the “doctrine of the social contract”, keeping all within the limits and duties of each party. A civil liberty is reached and gives the people rights to determine who is fit for the position. Protection, organization, authority, power, and liberty are reached through contract between the people and the government. 4. James Madison argued for the ratification of the constitution in the federalist papers. He attempted to persuade the readers of New York to agree with or support the written constitution.
