Critique on: The Challenges and Potential of Developing a More Effective Youth Work Curriculum with Young Men
Throughout its history in Northern Ireland the youth service has recognised the need to work with young men, but it has mainly been based around their recreational needs rather than their emotional and health needs. The nature of our culture is for young men to suppress and hide their feelings; they are expected to be brave and fearless, and to show a weakness on these would be viewed as a severe blow to their masculinity. Young men who show any vulnerability are seen to be wimps, are called names, are laughed at, and are the subject of much criticism and abuse within their communities.
This article outlines how, up until recently young men’s emotional and health needs were not being met within the youth service, and how youth workers and practitioners need to be able to recognise and respond to the needs of young men especially those living in social and economical deprivation.
