Beowulf – Epic Summary
Hrothgar, King of Denmark, was the grandson of the great king Shield Sheafson. ...
The news of the demon’s terrorizing actions in Denmark traveled around the world and eventually reached Geatland--more specifically, a Geat warrior named Beowulf. As the greatest hero in the world, Beowulf decided to help Hrothgar and sailed to Denmark with fourteen of his bravest warriors. Hrothgar, who had once done a great favor for Beowulf’s father Ecgtheow, gladly accepted Beowulf’s offer, and held a celebration feast in the hero’s honor. During the feast a jealous and bitter warrior of Hrothgar’s, Unferth, accused Beowulf of having a false reputation. Slow to anger, Beowulf accused Unferth of drunkenness and calmly described the past accomplishments of his life. ... Beowulf fought him unarmed and proved himself stronger than the demon. Grendel managed to escape without his arm, which Beowulf had torn off in attempt to hold on to the monster.
