The narrator of this story seems like a very subdued man in the beginning. ... However, when he hires Bartleby as one of his workers there is a drastic change in his personality.
During the first few days of having Bartleby on staff the narrator is very pleased with his work and efficiency. However, when he asks Bartleby to do a simply task and he simply replys, “I would prefer not to”(1048).
