The California Dream
Richard Rodriguez’s (1988) “Proofs”, and Jack Lopez’s (1998) “Cholos and Surfers”, are similar in the areas in which California offers a promise of a better life, a place where one could do anything one wishes, both stories also illustrate the idea of the California dream, in return they also contrast in the way each authors’ characters assimilate to the dream. The vision of the California dream has been the one constant idea behind the readings we have done so far. Another constant within the readings is the hidden attribute that the dream carries, the attribute of sacrifice. Overlooking sacrifice will surely result in the disillusionment of the dream. One can also argue that the depth of a persons sacrifice will usually indicate that the California dream is unique to each individual’s perception of the idea, examples from the readings clearly indicate the sacrifice the characters take in order to attain his or her personal vision of the California dream. ... The passage “I will send for you, or I will come home rich”, is the idea that most immigrant men embed in their soul, it is an idea passed on to their children about the preconceived thought that California is a land of opportunity and either they will come home rich because of the California dream or they will send for their kin because of the fruitful nature of the California dream.
