Problem solving methodology The problem is to work out what is required of the system and how to achieve this by designing improvements to an existing system or design a new system Analysis – means separating things into their parts and examining those parts To conduct a preliminary investigation – a broad overview of the system. Need to understand the system i.e. how it works its functions, performance and what changes are required and whether change is a feasible. One way investigation is conducted is through “observation” – provides valuable information about the actual rather than theoretical procedures – insight into current skill levels and skill - skill training required- “top Down Analysis” – Involves breaking down the solution into progressively smaller pieces to allow implementation between different teams. This technique ask the following questions: How well does the system work? Is it logical? What is each person’s role? What are the procedures with in the system? How does info flow? How do we find out whether the system is working well and meet the needs of the organisation? (for new system ) (time consuming and expensive) how is the system working ? what does the system need? Bottom – Up Analysis (for an existing system) Simple approach which asks the question – how can we fix this easily and quickly?
