A few days after viewing a screening of ‘A Knight’s Tale,’ starring Heath Ledger, I began to like it much more than when I first left the theatre that night. ... Had I given it less shallow thought, I might have considered the implication that ‘A Knight’s Tale’ might be a cinematic version of one of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, which it is not, so I’ll hold fast to the admission that I went for the beef cake. ... But watching armor clad knights in a jousting match battle to the tune of “We will Rock You,” and a fledging would-be medieval knight practice his skills to the deep tones of “Low Rider,” struck me as, well, quite frankly, ODD. ... I still can quite figure it out, but so much was campy and fun about his raucous tale that I’ll forgive him the misdirection. ...
‘A Knight’s Tale’ is a capricious, medieval romantic-adventure movie; it is purely escapist fare.
