Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist, poet and a leader of the philosophical movement of transcendentalism, while Henry David Thoreau was American writer, philosopher, and naturalist who believed in the importance of individualism. Thoreau and Emerson both believed in the importance of the individual which is expressed in Emersons essay "Self-Reliance and in Thoreaus essay "Civil Disobedience - 2", but differed on the extent to which a person should declare himself or herself an individual. Throeau and Emerson even though they were alike in many ways they differ on aspects of religion and the way an individual should initiate change.
