cent introduction of curriculum-based mandatory volunteering programs has become a contentious issue within the voluntary, community-based (VCB) sector. Those in favor of mandated volunteering or community service say that it is a panacea; a cure all promoting citizenship and satisfying the VCB sector’s need to recruit volunteers. Its critics argue that ‘mandatory volunteering’ is an oxymoron, with the potential to undermine the inherent altruistic nature of volunteering. This debate is reflected in the labeling of such programs, which ranges from ‘curriculum based community service’, to ‘volunteering for credit’ to ‘mandatory volunteering’. This issue is on the agenda of many governments, and it is essential that the VCB sector examine the benefits and implications.
