Faith Ringgold s Tar Beach as a Black Feminist Text

Faith Ringgold’s Tar Beach as a Black Feminist Text

Tar Beach, despite the fact that it is a children’s book, exemplifies many of the themes that Barbara Smith discusses in her essay “Toward a Black Feminist Criticism.” The story was originally produced as part of a quilt designed by Ringgold in 1988, and now displayed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. ... The narrative works as a Black Feminist literature based on three aspects: the female hero, the presence of African-American folk tale images, and the story’s visual representation in quilt form.
Tar Beach is the story of an eight-year-old girl who flies over the city at night, freeing herself, and claiming what is rightfully hers – the George Washington Bridge. ... ” Similar to the children’s dreams described in Morrison’s Sula, and quoted by Smith, Cassie’s flying is a tool for wish fulfillment.
