... Gifted and talented children are those identified by professionally qualified persons who by virtue of outstanding abilities are capable of high performance. These are children who require special educational programs and or services beyond those normally provided by the regular school program. It is important that students with exceptional potential are encouraged during their elementary years in order to ensure that the development of their specific gifts and talents continue to blossom throughout their education
     To some people, giftedness is purely academic for example, a child who earns all A’s on report cards. That child may be gifted, along with the children who, at age 3, can count to 100 or read a book, or pick out a tune on the piano. ... It is difficult to generalize about children who are gifted because their characteristics and needs are so personal and unique. While gifted students exhibit some common traits, no two gifted students’ possess the same characteristics. Giftedness can be viewed in multiple ways and children may be gifted in one or several ability areas.
Young gifted children are intensely curious, produce a constant stream of questions, learn quickly, remember easily, and think about the world differently than their age-mates. ... If their giftedness is not properly channeled, young gifted children are at risk for boredom, frustration, and depression. ... So the three main things to look for are the pace in which they learn, the depth of interest they have in what they learn, and the interests they hold as compares to children their age. ... As a result, the behaviors of these students in the classroom may be quite diverse. They are not necessarily the high achievers, the most attentive, or the most cooperative in terms of task completion and compliance in the classroom.
     Gifted and talented students come from all socioeconomic and cultural groups and are part of the population of most schools. ...
Even with all of the research and various opinions on the subject there is no single technique, which teachers can use to identify gifted and talented students. ... An effective identification process includes nomination of possible gifted or talented students and a confirmation of students needs.
