The Potato Eaters, one of Vincent Van Gogh’s famous pieces of art, was painted in 1885 in a small village in Holland. The Potato Eaters consists of several peasants gathered around the dinner table about to eat the potatoes they have farmed. Van Gogh’s aim was to emphasize that those people, eating their potatoes in the lamp-light have dug the earth with those very hands they put in the dish, and so the painting conveys the essence of manual labour, and how these peasants have honestly earned their food.
