The poems “Island man” by Grace Nichols and “ Blessing” by Imtiaz Dharker both portray the importance of water in there culture in different ways. In “Blessing” water is in short supply and the poem shows the joy that spreads over people when water is available if only for a short period. “Island man” illustrates the morning life of a man who used to live in the Caribbean to his current life in London.
The language used in Blessing is quite harsh at the start and very clearly shows the hardship of a life without water. ...
There is never enough water. ... Many “religious” or words showing value and worth are used such as “ blessing”, “kindly god”, “silver”, “congregation” and ”fortune”. “Island man” is a comparison of two places, which are both very different from each other. ... Until the last line of the second stanza, the reader does know if the island man is experiencing the sea or if the sea is only a memory.
