Ageing the process of growing old (Oxford dictionary). An ageing population is therefore a population which is growing old. The United Kingdom is just one example of many countries now having to think about coping with an ageing population.
Ageing populations is a relatively new issue for countries to face. ... In the past, ageing populations were never a worry because very few people live into old age. Since the 20th century the life expectancy has increased dramatically due to medical advancements, improvements in healthcare, sanitation and great improvements in the standard of living within the UK.
Historically, the ageing of the population was largely due to a fall in fertility that began towards the end of the 19th century. ... More recently, lower fertility rates and improvements in the rates of mortality for older people have contributed to the ageing trend.
Ageing populations tends to be a problem that is occurring in MEDCs such as Japan and France but not in LEDC’s where there birth rates remain high such as in India.
There are areas within the UK where the population is ageing or where there is a younger population. Eastbourne and Bournemouth are known
as retirement areas, as both have a quiet neighbourhoods, in comparison
to cities such as Nottingham which have a large student population.
