a boxing match on a chessboard

A Chessboard - Black and White. A Boxing match – two corners; no fear; a drive to win. The political arena in the world has become a boxing ring; a ring checked like a Chessboard and the players having to choose their moves thoughtfully and use their punches frugally. So what’s all this talk about sports and games? It is because nothing has been spared from the smooches of politics. Even a game like Cricket is caught in the cyclone of politics and has been washed thoroughly by the detergents of the politicians. The same is the case in Zimbabwe where Robert Mugabe’s rule has drawn in a lot of flak and has become the topic of many a discussions in the EU and all concerned. In 1997 when Mr. Mugabe announced plans to grab around 1,500 farms Britain was alarmed. He said Britain should foot the bill for compensation because Rhodesian colonists had stolen the land from blacks in the first place. But Britain refused, pointing out that much of the land redistributed since 1980 had ended up in the hands of government officials rather than the poor. There has been a constant deterioration of relations between England and Zimbabwe because of their solid and often stubborn stands on the issues in the African country ever since. Mugabe has politicised everything in Zimbabwe. Even food aid to the needy has not been spared. Now those Zimbabweans who are in need of food aid have to show the member card of the Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party to get the provisions.
