· Global warming – rise in temp due to excessive heat trapped in atmosphere · Caused by: Þ Increase in population: o More land needed for housing, schooling, cultivation of food crops o Thus, land is cleared – usually by burning – release carbon dioxide o Some farming methods release greenhouse gases eg methane into the atmosphere o Oxides of nitrogen is released by chemical fertilizers Þ Increase in industrialization: o Burning of fossil fuels eg oil, coal o More CFCs and carbon dioxide produced Þ These greenhouse gases – carbon dioxide, methane, oxides of nitrogen and CFCs accumulate in the atmosphere – trap solar radiation from space and prevents them from escaping back into space – more heat trapped · Evidence of increasing significance: Þ Global temp has increased drastically between 1980 to 2000 – prob due to the industrialization – produce more greenhouse gases – trap more heat Þ Compared to previous years when temp change was not so great – that was before development occurred – thus population increase was not too significant Þ Between 1920 to 1940 – global temp change increased as well b) Using information from Fig 7, describe the likely positive and negative effects of global warming.
