Lecture 3 A Portrait of the Artist Impressionist Highly organised nature from beginning to end. Relativism. Reader response. STYLE Joyce = famous stylist. Moat striking thing about A Portrait Imitative – baby talk begins the novel – ‘moo cow.’ Baby Tukoo = Stephen Short and simple sentences – child eye’s view of the world. Bed wetting – we share this but NOT Stephen’s precocious development as an artist. Obsession with words. Pondering meanings of words. Pondering the ‘sounds of words’ eg ‘suck.’ Later associates it with lavatory. Always within Stephen’s stream of consciousness (not in Sons and Lovers) Stephen as a developing artist and writer. Stephen = an adolescent for a great part of the book. Indulgent emotionalism p .183 ‘His heart trembled…’ Practically every word in this passage repeats. Complaint about the repetitiveness. Does the style intrude itself? Hardy: ‘A masterpiece of pastiche’ Putting bits together and so on – cabbage stumps from the bible etc Verse style Different styles as you move through the life of Stephen. Variety of styles – different to Lawrence. Includes different styled for other characters speech patterns. Mr Casey – tells about spitting in …eye etc Different styles trying to do different things. Mimetic defence – A portrait based on his own experiences of the young man therefore lack of restraint of the young man etc.
