Bipolar disorder is a disease that affects about two percent of the population. ... Symptoms of bipolar disorder typically do not emerge until the start of adolescents and into early adulthood. In our society, many people live with bipolar disorder; however, the abundance of sufferers is adolescents. Adolescents that suffer from bipolar disorders alternate between manic and depressive episodes.
Even though bipolar disorders are treatable, the exact causes are unclear. Evidence indicates that there are differences in the brain, genetic differences, neurotransmitters, and circadian rhythms that relate to the development of bipolar disorder. Genes for bipolar disorders can be inherited, however not everyone who carries the genes develop the disorder. ... “The study which used data from sets of 153 and 275 families, found a significant association between one of six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the promoter region of GRK3 and the presence of bipolar disorder.” (Clinical Psychiatry News July 2003)
Because many adolescents experience the occasional mood swing, parents and physicians are occasionally unable to identify if the child is showing symptoms of adolescents or bipolar disorder. In these cases, even though an occasional mood swing is an unexplained one, adolescents with bipolar disorder experience a different degree of mood swings. ... The study found that regardless of whether or not the parent had bipolar disorder, the twins’ risk of having bipolar disorder was in the same ten percentile. Among seventy percent of genetically identical twin cases, one twin had bipolar disorder, and the other did not. Among pairs of fraternal twins, who have about half their genes in common, both twins had the disease. ... This observation suggests that the risk for bipolar disorder comes from genetic influence, not from exposure to a parent’s disorder or from family problems caused by the disorder.
