Fredrick Douglas was born a slave in Tuckahoe, Maryland. He barley knew his mother, not seeing her more than four or five times in his life. When he was young, he saw disturbing things about slavery. He saw many people get beat, leaving gnashes on their backs. He saw overseers beat their slaves to death. He saw slaves get shot, and killed. He saw his own brother get picked up by the throat and slammed to the ground and then get his head stomped on until blood came out of his ears and nose. When slaves disobeyed their masters, they were beaten and shipped off to show others what would happen if they disobeyed. Fredrick was half black and half white. He never knew who his father was, although there were rumors that it was his master. Chapter 1 Fredrick Douglas was born in Tuckahoe, Maryland. He didn’t even know his age. He hardly knew his mother, and didn’t see her more than five times in his life. To me, this would be horrible, to be a child and be separated from your mother, hardly knowing her or anything about her. His father was a white man, and it was a rumor that his father was his master. Slaves were never told much, they were just told what do to. Children were separated from their mothers at a very early age and were cared by older women slaves so that the mothers could get back to their work. The masters were very cruel, and would whip their slaves with a cowskin. One whip would bring blood to the slaves backs. Fredrick’s aunt disobeyed orders and was whipped by the master with the cowskin as he swore at her. Chapter 2 If the slaves misbehaved, they were severely beaten, shipped off, and then sold. This was not only a part of their punishment, but also a display to other slaves not to disobey. The slaves didn’t get much. They not only worked their hearts out, but in return they received little. They got a monthly allowance of food that consisted of eight pounds of pork or fish, and one bushel of corn meal. They got new clothes once a year that included two coarse linen shirts, one pair of linen trousers, one jacket, one pair of stockings and one pair of shoes. The children had to go around without any shoes or clothes. Slaves didn’t own beds, instead they slept on the ground and were lucky to have a coarse blanket. They never got to sleep much; after working for their master’s they had to work for themselves. One thing that really stuck out to me was when he was talking about singing. He explains that a slave makes up a song that doesn’t have a tune and doesn’t rhyme.
