Esssay on Jacob
The story of Jacob’s life and the life of his family is found in Genesis 25-50. ... Jacob’s life is multifaceted, his spiritual heritage and the dynamics of his family of origin played an important role is shaping his personality and character.
Jacob’s story actually begins with Abram. ... 26 After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esaus heel; so he was named Jacob. ... 27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was a quiet man, staying among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob. ... First, Jacob was second born coming out of the womb grasping Esau’s heel, hence the name Jacob. Second, Jacob was a quiet man, staying among the tents in contrast to Esau who liked hunting and the great outdoors. The third and last fact is that Isaac loved Esau and Rebekah loved Jacob. Genesis does not record any events in regards to the childhood of Esau and Jacob. ... It is important to again note that God chose Jacob over Esau before they were born. ... 25:29-34 tells us that Jacob made stew and that his brother Esau came in from the field famished. When Esau asked Jacob for some of the stew Jacob responded by saying, “First sell me your “birthright”. ... Jacob and Esau witnessed the faith of their father and the faithfulness of God. ... Rebekah schemes and draws Jacob into a plan to deceive Isaac and gain Esau’s blessing. This is quite interesting because here Rebekah is taking matters into her own hands (as Jacob did when taking advantage of Esau in a moment of weakness to gain the birthright). God has already chosen Jacob and nothing can thwart that plan but Rebekah is going to make sure. So again, we see Jacob (at the urging of his mother) to take advantage of his weak father. To credit Jacob somewhat we do see him protesting the plan but more out of fear vice the fact that it was wrong. However, this seems to show that Jacob was a compliant son and tended to do what his mother wanted (as we will see again later). ... He knows that God has chosen Jacob but picked Esau as the favored one in direct disobedience. ...
Predictably, so, Esau was distraught over losing his rightful blessing and held a grudge towards Jacob, threatening to kill him when Isaac passes away (26:41). Rebekah hears of the plan and tells Jacob of her plan to send him away to Haran, where here brother Laban lives. ...
In order to get Jacob safely away, Isaac needed to agree to the plan. ... She uses the wives of Esau as a way to get Isaac to send Jacob away.
