In the play Death of a Salesman Millers definition of tragedy is “The most accurately balanced portrayal of the human being in his struggle for happiness.” Willy Loman was a perfect example of what Miller portrayed in his definition. Willy Loman was struggling for happiness for him and his family, but in the wrong way. Willy is a Universal tragic figure who like most people, is struggling to find happiness and success. In this story there were many conflicts between Will Loman and others, and many of those conflicts left Willy in a dilemma. The primary conflict was with his son Biff, Willy’s hopes and his dreams are centered on Biff; Willy has been blowing his son full of hot air his whole life and now it has caught up with him.
