Sampling and Sampling Distribution Probability Distributions Random Variables If we toss a coin once, the number of head showing up is either 0 or 1, or we roll a die, the number of points on the upper face of the die is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. In the above cases, we are concerning with a numbers that are associated with elements of chance ¡V values of a random variable. A random variable is a quantity that can take on the different values of a given set with specified probabilities. Thus, in the above two cases, the number of head and the number of points are the random variables of tossing a coin and rolling a die respectively.
