Quicksand

Quicksand pg.1 In Nella Larsen’s Quicksand, she dives right into informing the reader of the attitude of the main character on the first page. The first sentence starts out by saying “Helga Crane sat alone in her room…” This immediately gives the reader an idea about what type of character this Helga Crane may be. The reader starts to think that perhaps she is a loner or she likes to isolate herself from the rest of society, for reasons that will probably be revealed later in the novel. The author plays a lot on the ideas of light, dark, and colors in this opening paragraph. Helga’s room was described as being “in soft gloom”. Literally this simply means that her room was dim or partially dark.
