The treaty of Versailles was harsh because it punished the new German government, called the weimar republic, it was not the weimar republic who had started the war but the previous government. The old government had been a dictatorship and it was therefore unfair to punish the German public, who had had no say in the war. ... Germany saw the treaty of Versailles as humiliating because the French made them sign the treaty of Versailles in the room that the French had surrendered in years before.
