Profiling in 21st Century America
By Keith Dias 9/23/03
Racial profiling is a verifiable social problem because it involves a mode of behavior that many people consider violating society’s values on race and prejudice. There are also many years of scientific research studies to help analyze this issue of profiling. The main groups around which racial profiling centers are the Japanese Americans during WWII, African American motorists on our nations highways and people with Arab or Muslim affiliations after September 11th. ...
Mixed feelings exist in our country today partly because of the racial profiling of all the above groups. ... Surely, though, the possibility of using racial profiling as one of many tools to fight crime is much preferable to only reacting to crime. ... (Sailer 2003)
So why do we have all the resistance to profiling? I believe it’s the fine line that needs to be walked between objective profiling as a component in fighting crime and the misuse of power into discrimination or racism. Defense attorneys also routinely ring the “profiling” bell to get their clients off.
