Narrator: The first major American civilization to fall to the Spanish was that of the Aztecs. The Aztec Empire was relatively new; it dated from approximately the fourteenth century, but enjoyed a successful history of strong expansion. The empire was still growing when the Spaniards appeared at the southern boundary of the Valley of Mexico. The Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán, was a marvelous complex of cities, lakes, and canals that served as the center of Mesoamerican civilizations. ... Velásquez therefore sent expeditions into the Yucatán and the Gulf of Mexico between 1516 and 1518 to conduct inspection missions in the surrounding area. ... Intrigued and excited about the possibility of finding the source of this wealth, Velásquez commissioned Hernán Cortés to explore, trade, and search for Christian captives in the Yucatán. ... Do you think you could go explore where the Aztec Empire is? ... I bet you’ll meet many exotic Aztec women.
Cortes: OK
(Exit Diego Velasquez)

With a few pieces of artillery, sixteen horsemen, and roughly 400 infantry soldiers recruited from the poor whites of Cuba, Cortés made for the Gulf coast.
