RENE LALIQUE 1860-1945 Movement- art Nouveau/art Deco Rene Lalique was born in 1860 in a village called Ay in northern France. Little is known about his early years except That he won an award at the age of 11 for drawing. In his early teens he began more artistic promise and sold pictures of flowers and insects on ivory plaques. He was an apprentice at a jeweller at the age of sixteen. At 21 he returned to Paris for a career in freelance jeweller his early work was traditional and few of these pieces survive today.
