Communication Date: September 15th, 2003 HALL’S DISTANCES Communication Skill Defined: “Edward Hall (1959, 1966) distinguishes four distances that define the type of relationship between people and identifies the various messages that each distance communicates.” “In intimate distance, ranging from actual touching to 18 inches, the presence of the other individual is unmistakable.” “Personal distance, refers to the protective “bubble” that defines your personal space, which measures from 18 inches to 4 feet.” “At social distance, ranging from 4 to 12 feet, you lose the visual detail you have at personal distance.” “Public distance, measuring from 12 to more than 25 feet, protects you.” (Joseph A. Devito, Essentials of Human Communication Fourth Edition, pg.133) Participants: Customers at the Gap clothing store, my coworkers, my friend and I Intimate Distance Situation: While working the Gap there is an environment of being friendly helpful, knowledgeable and quick. But at such times at the gap you don’t want to use this distance to have an uncomfortable situation with a customer or a person that you don’t even know.
