Section 1 January 30, 1871 The 19th century brought industrialization and unification to the German states. In 1871, the German Emperor Wilhelm I and his chancellor Otto von Bismarck unified Germany for the first time. The imperialism of Germany and the other European powers led to the outbreak of World War I in August 1918. Karl Marx Marx, along with Frederick Engels, wrote “The Manifesto of the Communist Party” in 1848. He has become one of the most prolific writers of his generation, his thoughts and theories are still discussed today in political, social, economic, and academic circles.
