The New World Blanche has Entered

On a dark evening in May, Blanche Dubois arrives in New Orleans on a visit to her sister Stella, carrying a valise looking quite lost. When she enters the world of Elysian Fields she is shocked by both the area and small building where her sister is currently living with her husband Stanley. ... The passage tells us that although poor, the area has a “raffish charm” to it and that the houses “are mostly white frame, weathered grey, with rickity outside stairs and galleries”. ... “In this part of New Orleans you are practically always just around the corner, or a few doors down the street”, “New Orleans is a cosmopolitan city where there is relatively warm and easy intermingling of races”

Overall, it is clear to see that Blanche’s world is very different to the one in which her sister has married into.
