E-business and Intellectual Property
From the time we are little we are taught that it is important to share. ... We find this same dichotomy in the business world. ... One of these most closely guarded assets of a company is its intellectual property.
“Intellectual property is tangible property that can be protected under federal law because its considered proprietary to a company or individual, in addition, intellectual property covers products and personal technical knowledge” (Alexander, 2000). ... History says that the mogul emperor Shah Jahun took protection of intellectual property to the extreme when, after the completion of the Taj Mahal, he had his soldiers chop off the hands of the craftsmen so they could not build another monument like it (Why Care, 2003). Most companies do not take intellectual property protection to such extremes but do find it necessary to take more steps each year to guard these prized assets. This paper will examine how intellectual property and its protection impacts the business goals and strategies of an e-business organization, current protection laws, who has jurisdiction and an opinion on what should be the extent of appropriate protection.
Protection of Intellectual Property
Information Technology (IT) managers often struggle to keep pace with the ever changing technology of their field. ... Today however, IT managers are finding that in addition to remaining current on new technology, they must also have an understanding of intellectual property (IP) laws, especially as they pertain to e-business. They must be aware of how best to protect their company from intellectual property theft as well as providing guidance so the company does not violate the IP rights of others.
